The 24-70mm 2.8L II standard focal length zoom features a large aperture throughout its focal length and has the latest advances in optical lens design which help minimize aberrations in the periphery at wide-angle as well as reduce colour blurring around the edges of the subject. In lamens terms you will achieve clearer, sharper, smoother images from edge to edge. You will find that this zoom lens is sharper than some fixed lens' which is relatively unheard of. Optimized lens coatings also help ensure exceptional color balance while minimizing ghosting.
The lens is also equipped with a circular 9-blade diaphragm for beautiful, soft backgrounds. The ultrasonic motor enables silent autofocusing along with the CPU allowing fantastic speed. As many have pointed out it doesn't have the much sought after Image Stabilisation, however, don't be put off it's f/2.8 speed means that even without IS it minimilises distortion and obtains seriously clean images. It's a professional lens that is well built and hardy, Canon have even included weather proofing in the build and fluorine coatings on the lens surfaces to help reduce soiling, smears and fingerprints. Do a little light reading on the web about this lens you will find very few negative comments except perhaps the cost.
